Tanzania/Burundi: Goal Galore Ignites Kagame Cup

3 July 2009

Khartoum — Miembeni FC got off to glittering start at the East African Club Championship dubbed Kagame Cup after beating Intersports of Burundi 2-1 in a contested match.

As Miembeni bagged all three points, lowly ranked Benadir Telecom of Somalia held Tanzania Prisons to a 2-2 draw at Red Castle Stadium.

The opening matches in all groups have recorded a big number of goals scored as compared to the previous edition.

The hosts El Merreikh posted a convincing victory when they pulverised Atraco of Rwanda by 6-1 in the Tuesday's late match, sending warning to other participating teams.

Buoyed up by a big home crowd, the home team started the match at a high tempo that the Burundians failed to cope with.

Atraco's resilience only lasted for 31 minutes when El Merrekh's Nigerian import Indorance Idahor drove a powerful volley to break the deadlock.

Naserdin Shigail outpaced the Atraco defenders to add the second goal eight minutes later before Idahor scored the third.

Seconds before the breather, Badreldin Galad unleashed a stupendous free kick to give the hosts an unassailable 4-0 lead.

El Merreikh wrapped up the victory with two more goals from Faisal Ajab and Haytham Tambah and responded late to score a consolation goal through Peter Kagabo.

Kenya's Mathare United thrashed hapless Kartile of Eritrea 3-0 in a one-sided match while Uganda's KCC overcame plucky TP Mazembe of DRC 3-2.

Anthony Bongole, Tonny Okollo, and Jeremiah Sebuyiira scored KCC's goals.

This year's sponsorship package has risen to $600,000 (Sh 600,000,000) and the champions would walk away with a whooping Sh65million.

The second and third winners would pocket around Sh40 million and Sh25 million respectively.
