Monrovia — After months of confrontation between commuters and commercial taxi and bus drivers, the Government of Liberia has finally released new transport fares for Monrovia and its environs.
Announcing the new transport fares at the joint news conference hosted by the Ministries of Commerce and Transport, Commerce, Minister Miata Beysolow, said the new transport fares were adjusted with little increases.
She said the slight increment in the new fares come as a result of an increase in the price of gasoline by US$ 35 cents.
Minister Beysolow stressed that the adjustment in transport fares takes immediate effect.
Minister Beysolow urged commuters and commercial car owners to cooperate with the new transport fares.
Also addressing the news conference, the Deputy Minister of Transport, Julius Caesar, issued strong warning to commercial drivers to abide by the new adjustment in the transport fares affecting Monrovia and its environs.
According to Deputy Minister Caesar, mechanism has been put in place to closely monitor the new transport fares. He noted that men will be stationed at various embarkations to make sure that perpetrators are brought to book.
Minister Caesar vowed to make sure that the new transport fares are not violated, and even where it is violated, the person will not go unpunished. furthered that over the past time the enforcement of laws has been a serious setback for the ministry in term of transport fare, but said it is major challenge and he is willing to do his best.
Minister Caesar asserted that penalty for the first offence is US$100.00 for taxis and US$200.00 for Buses.
According to the minister, the penalty for second offence for taxis is US$ 200.00 and bus US$400.00, and two years suspension of operator's driver license if caught in the 3rd offence. He noted that "the people of Liberia are law abiding and will not allow themselves be called violators, but if any one violates, drastic action awaits them."
He called on commuters not to allow themselves be exploited by any drivers, but must always help to bring perpetrators to book.
