Gambia: Olympic Day Run Held

The Gambia National Olympic Committee in partnership with Africell held the Olympic Day Run 2009 at Africell headquarters on 4th July 2009.

The Olympic day run is a mass sport celebrated throughout the world to remember the founding father of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

This year's theme is, "Youth Empowerment Against Drugs and Alcohol". In the Olympic race, students participate in 3km, 5km and 10 km races for both boys and girls.

In the 3km run for boys, Kalifa Kujabi of Abuko Lower Basic took first position while 2nd position was taken by Alpha Bah from Muhammadan Lower Basic and the 3rd position occupied by Alieu Jonga Greater Banjul. For the girls 3km run, Kadijatou Dem of Abuko took first, followed by Ida Jatta of Bakoteh Upper and third place was won by Amie Bojang also of Abuko Lower Basic School.

In the 5km run for boys, Omar Samateh of Abuko Upper took first followed by Omar Nyassi Bakoteh Upper and Kawsu Jaiteh of Kanifing East. For girls Sarjo Conteh of Abuko Upper took first followed by Angel Jatta of Kanifing Upper and Buta Jallow of Abuko.

The last run of the day is 10km from Brusubi Junction to Africell Headquarters. Saikou Camara of St. Augustine's Senior seized the 1st position followed by Ousman Suwareh Grater Banjul and Modou Kebbeh of SoS. Mariama Demba for the girls took first place followed by Ma Awa Drammeh of Greater Banjul and Meta Krubally of Latrikunda Sabiji. All these participants are awarded with certificates from the GNOC Committee; the day run was chaired by Momodou Demba from GNOC.
