Marrima T. Jallow of Gambia Senior Secondary School and resident in Essau has emerged the female champion in the Ndungu Kebbeh Road Race on Saturday after finishing 4km race in 13th minutes ahead of Awa Jobe of Ndunga Kebbeh Basic cycle School and Fatou Ceesay.
The first ever race which is aimed at raising funds for the village Basic Cycle School as well as developing and encouraging grass root participation in the long distance race was initiated by Mamadou Max Jallow, the international liaison officer for Brufut Marathon.
The female 4km race was completed by a total of 16 participants. At the start of the race, the eventual winner Mariama Jallow was seriously challenged by Awa and Fatou. Both were trailing closely behind Mariama until at about 100m from the junction branching off from Kerewan highway that she employed experience and stamina to out pace her challengers.
Awa Jobe resisted Mariama's lead and finished a minute behind her and got 13 minutes timing in 4km.
Fatou Touray of Toro Alasan occupied the third spot in 15 minute.
In the male event which is 8km, Modou Bah from Kerr Alhagie Kerou confidently outclassed Omar Yankateh and Modou Touray who were closely following his shadow.
Madou Bah conquered the 8km distance in 24 minutes while Omar Yankateh came second in 25th minute and was closely challenged by Modou Touray who came behind him in 26 minute.
According to the organizers, all these people in both categories have an automatic qualification to participate in the Brufut Road Race slated for December.
As tokens of appreciation of thanks for their participation, Ndungu Kebbeh Road Race Association awarded D500, D300, D200 respectively for the first, and second and third position holders for both males and females.
Also certificates were awarded to participants.
Speaking to press Mariama T. Jallow conveyed her gratefulness to her mum and dad for according her the opportunity to engage in sports. She narrated that with or without competition she is always training. And that is why she is realizing the outcome, such as finance, good health etc, she said. She also called on her fellow girls to participate in sports.
