Gambia:A Woman Under Police Custody for Dumping Baby in URR

Information reaching this reporter has confirmed that a married woman name withheld said to be a resident of Garawol.village in Kantora district of the URR, has been arrested and detained at Fatoto Police Station and transferred to the Basse Police Station where she is currently said to be detained.

According to sources from Garawol, the accused got pregnant out of wedlock, as the husband is said to be living in Spain for four years. However she became pregnant and delivered in her bath room and allegedly dumped her new born baby in a bucket and absconded to a nearly village called Baragie Kunda in the Sami District.

However, according to source, upon suspicion of the behavior of the suspect, neighbours broke her house and mounted an investigation and later found the lifeless baby inside the house in a bucket. The body was then sent to Garawol Health Centre, but could not be left there as there was no cooling facility available. The only option was to quickly bury the corpse.

In an interview with a health officer in Garawol, the story was confirmed the health officer declined further comments.

A senior police officer in URR confirmed the story but referred this reporter to the police PRO Inspector Secka which efforts proved futile.
