Tanzania: Preparations for Key Road Safety Conference Finalised

Dar es Salaam — All is set for the historic 'make road safe conference' to be held in Dar es Salaam from tomorrow.

President of Automobile Association of Tanzania, (AAT), Mr Nizar Jivani, who is the conference host, said almost all preparations for the event, have been completed.

Mr Jivani who is also the secretary of African Council of Touring and Automobile (FIACTA), said that the AAT will host the historic conference in collaboration with World Bank, FIA Foundation, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and global road safety facility.

He said among other things, the conference will review progress on improving road safety in Africa.

The issues to be discussed will focus on strategies to reduce road accidents, improvement of roads and evaluation of progress made after the Accra Declaration on road safety which was adopted by ministers for transport in year 2007 in Ghana.

Under the theme, 'African decade of action for road safety,' Mr Jivani said Africa will make a concentrated effort to reduce deaths, fatal injuries and also improve road safety by improving road infrastructure.

The conference will attract delegates from across the region, road and infrastructure experts, government representatives, donor agencies and non government organizations.

The minister for Infrastructure Development, Dr Shukuru Kawambwa, will be among key speakers at the conference, along with chief engineer Mdeni Kipande, acting director of safety in the Ministry of Infrastructure Development.

Transport ministers of Uganda, South Africa and Kenya will also attend the conference.

Other prominent figures who would participate in the conference are Mr David Kajange, head of transport division of the African Union Commission; Prince Michael of Kent, patron of commission for global road safety, Michelle Yeoh; global ambassador of Make road safety campaign and chairman of FIA African Council.

Mr Jivani added that alongside the conference, there will be two other important meetings to take place on Tuesday including meeting of the FIA Council for Touring and Automobile and the meeting of the FIA confederation of African countries in motor sport.

He explained that the FIAACTA and CACMS meetings will be represented by several African countries to discuss various issues on road safety, mobility and tourism.
