Heavy winds preceding light rain around 9 pm on Wednesday, 1 July, 2009, are reported to have swept away the roofs of several houses that left many families homeless in the village of Baro Kunda in the Wuli West District, Upper River Region (URR).
According to an eye witness, the unusual winds have not only blown away the roofs of houses but also destroyed the foodstuff and clothes in some households.
Mori Kebba Barrow told this reporter that foodstuff such as rice, groundnuts and coos of some the families also got blown away by the heavy wind. He said the compounds of one Nfally Barrow, Badeh Kebbeh, Nuha Kebbeh and Alhagie Foday Touray are now roofless and rendered uninhabitable to shelter their families.
Mr. Barrow said the wind which was blowing with great intensity only lasted for fifteen minutes.
When asked about the plight of family members who lost their houses in the wind, he said they are being accommodated by friends and close relatives whose houses survived the ravaging wind.
Apparently, such heavy winds are not alien to the residents of Baro Kunda. A similar incident had occurred last year when the rainy season was about to start.
The disaster is said to have come at a time when farmers were returning to the farmland to prepare for the forthcoming rainy season. The lost of foodstuff is feared to have severe repercussions on the affected families as they are grappling with dwindling food supplies.
