Education is the corner stone of any socio-economic development effort of any institution or country. Therefore the search for relevant and quality education especially for our young future leaders cannot be over emphasized. These were the statements disclosed by Lamin Marong on behalf of his partners/ donors during a handing over of a four classroom block to the administration of Badala Nursery School in Faji-Kunda.
The community nursery school happily transferred from their corrugated built-classrooms into a newly built four classroom block, decorated with new tables and chairs. The structure was sponsored by philanthropist couple, Ben and Ann Schepers, his sisters and friends from Holland.
The school has been languishing under the worn out corrugated iron roofed classrooms since its inception in 1992 and has been creating unfavourable condition for the young learners. In addition to their series of negative experiences from the iron heated classrooms, the rains and its forceful prevailing winds also does not spare the conducive learning conditions.
According to Lamin Marong the Gambian counterpart of the philanthropists, in order to avoid the children from the threats of the wind and rain, the Schepers built this four classroom block, an office and a store for these needy children.
In complementing government's effort in attaining the United Nations Millennium Development Goal (MDGs), Marong disclosed that the Schepers are committed to the development of the school and promise to venture more into the school's sustainable development efforts. He concluded that the building will be officially inaugurated in November this year when Ben and corps and friends and sponsors would be around.
In his remarks, the Director of the learning centre Sheikh Tijan Ceesay thanked Marong, the Schepers family and friends for their visionary and timely intervention that protects these young children from frequent threats from this natural phenomenon. Describing them as true friends of the Gambia, Ceesay revealed that the philanthropists have been sponsoring over 50 children in his school.
He therefore calls on others to emulate the wonderful gesture which he said will go a long way in accessing and achieving this basic fundamental human right.
Ebrima MY Ceesay, chairman of the Parent teacher Association who gave the vote of thanks called for a proper and sustainable utilization of the furniture and the building.
