Gambia: NEA/UNDP Present Tools And Equipment to Refrigeration Technicians in LRR And NBR

As the Gambia is fast moving towards its international obligations in phasing-out the consumption and production of ODS by 1st January 2010, the National Environment Agency (NEA) in collaboration with the UNDP-Gambia has recently presented tools and equipments to regional refrigeration technicians from LRR and NBR at a colorful ceremony in Farafenni.

In his opening remarks on behalf of the Executive Director of the National Environment Agency, the Regional Programme Officer in Mansakonko Borry Mansa Demba has revealed that the importance of the ozone layer is its role in reducing harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun from reaching the earth's surface.

Demba disclosed that the layer provides a protective shield for plant and animal life from the ultraviolet radiation of the sun that can be particularly harmful to all living organisms and these harmful effects include increase in skin cancer, eye cataracts and blindness; suppression of the human immune system, damage to natural ecosystems and its adverse impact on climate change.

Ozone Programme Officer, Alhagie Sarr said the tools and equipment are meant for regional retrofitting Centers and therefore thanked the UNDP for facilitating this very important incentive grant. He said the annual data reports on the importation and consumption of ODS in the Gambia significantly reduced to 0.6 in 2007 and 0.3 in 2008.

ODS trainer and senior lecturer at GTTI Adul Aziz Mboge noted that the battle to repair the ozone layer represents a great concern to the Government of the Gambia. The equipments and materials presented include recovery machines, Vacuum pump, Mini-Oxy-Butane weld sets, Recovery bags, Refrigerant recovery cylinders, Electronic leak detectors, and equipped tool-kit box, and vacuum oil, phosphorous and welding sticks

Pa Ceesay and Lamin Jammeh Presidents of NBR and CRR refrigeration Technicians Associations reaffirm their commitment in the protection of the ozone layer. Similar presentation will take place in Basse for technicians from CRR and URR.
