The National Sports council in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, on Wednesday 1st July at the Independence Stadium held a one day pre-conference for all associations and regional sports committees.
According to Alex Dacosta the chairman of the council said this is an important milestone in the history of the council. He said there are many challenges in the development of sports in the Gambia and it is very important that they take these challenges extremely seriously.
Mr. Dacosta added: This forum is to tell them what is going to happen and how to listen to them and give their consent on how they plan to do things.
Mr. Dacosta stressed that when you serve sports, you need to serve in a manner you can help your communities and gain respect from them, and they need to structure themselves to make things that do not work.
Abdoulie Njie from sahel investment said in the formation of any policy or action plan "all stakeholders in that area must be fully involved in such a policy, so that at the end of the day they will take ownership of that policy; he said. Mr. Njie added that they want it to be a policy that every one understands.
Man Mbayick Njie, Permanent Secretary at the Department of Sports said when they said sports development, the mean their athletes to take part in competitions and win medals but not participate and add numbers.
He said the sports association has critical role to play as their aim should be to think of how to develop the athlete or sportsman to be an athlete of difference, he said.
Sheriff Gomez Minister for youth and sports said a lot of studying taking place and they need to look into them directly and solve them.
He pointed out that they need to maximize the success they want to achieve, to take it to higher heights. He added that they want every body to understand about the conference and how they need to contribute in the next conference.
