Arusha — Police in Arusha on Sunday arrested four heavily armed men who are suspected to have been planning to rob a local supermarket.

Regional police commander Matei Basilio said the suspects were found with various firearms, including the deadly sub-machine gun.

He told reporters that the four were planning to rob J.J Collection Supermarket on the Namanga Road.

One of the suspects was found with the sub-machine gun inside the supermarket where he had gone posing as a customer.

His colleagues were found hiding in a dark alley close to the supermarket by some patrol police officers.

The suspects attempted to escape in different directions when the police approached them in the alley.

The suspect who was caught with a sub-machine gun headed towards the shop while running away from the officers.

He was arrested in the shop, which was just about to be closed, Mr Basilio said.

"On being searched he was found with the gun with registration No. 108462 and admitted they intended to rob the shop," the RPC said.

Two of his colleagues, both with guns, managed to escape. Mr Basilio said the police were still interrogating the four at the central police station.

He appealed to members of the public to give any information that could lead to arrest of the suspects.

This is the second botched robbery in Arusha within a month. Early last month, several people were arrested as they prepared to commit a robbery in Njiro area.
