Tanzania: Livestock Prices And Supply Rise

Dar es Salaam — Both livestock prices increased despite the increase in cattle, goats and sheep in June this year compared with last May.

Meat prices in Dar es Salaam meat shops shows the downward trend compared with the past few weeks.

A kilo of meat current ranged at an average of Sh3,500 and Sh3,800 from between Sh3,800 and Sh4,000 a kilo previously.

The daily average livestock supply increased by 7.85 per cent last month compared with that of the previous month as herders sold more animals amid the scarcity of pastures.

A monthly report by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Marketing showed that 1,030 animals on the average were supplied daily last June from 955 the previous month.

Most of cattle were from Dodoma, Tabora, Shinyanga, Morogoro, Coast, Singida and Manyara regions. Goat and sheep delivered from Dodoma, Tabora, Manyara and Singida.

The report showed 610 cattle on the average were supplied daily to that market in June this year compared with 580 a month earlier.

The average price of a mature grade two cow was Sh388, 750 last month compared with Sh345,000 the previous month while that of a grade three was Sh230,100 more than Sh194,000 registered the previous month.

A mature grade two bull was sold for Sh501,500 last June more than Sh497,500 the preceding month, while a grade three animal sold at a slightly lower Sh424,500 from Sh427,000. Supplies of goats increased to an average of 310 a day last month from 275 the previous month.

A grade two she-goat was traded at an average of Sh51,850 last June from Sh50,150 the previous month. A grade three she-goat was sold for Sh34,500 compared with Sh31,800 over the period.

A grade two he-goat was traded at an average of Sh57,700 last month from Sh56,100 a month earlier, whereas a grade three one was sold for Sh40,000 from Sh35,200 over the period. Sheep supplies also climbed to an average of 110 animals a day last June from 100 the previous month.

The average price of a grade two ewe was Sh47,450 last June compared with Sh44,650 the previous month while a grade three animal was sold at Sh30,800 from Sh29,000 previously.

A grade two ram was sold for an average of Sh49,80 last month from Sh48,500 the preceding month. A grade three ram was sold for Sh34,500 from Sh33,550 earlier.
