Tanzania: Shortage of Facilities Not Hindrance to Fight Crime

Dodoma — Shortage of facilities facing the Police Force is not supposed to impede the unit to control crime in the country, the parliament heard yesterday.

This was said by the deputy minister for Home Affairs, Ambassador Khamis Kagasheki, when reacting to a question by Mr Mohamed Ali Said (Magogoni-CCM).

The MP had suggested that the Government should be held responsible if the Police Force failed to tame crime and safeguard people due to shortage of facilities and working tools.

"I want to assure this august house that shortage of facilities will not hinder our Police Force to fulfil its responsibilities of protecting civilians and their properties," said Ambassador Kagasheki.

Elaborating, the deputy minister said shortage of facilities in the Police Force was a result of financial constraints facing the Government.

But the Government has throughout been making sure that the force has enough and important facilities all the time to counter crime events.

He said the force had been using scant resources to protect people and their properties. It had introduced a number of strategies such as community policing, to ensure safety in many localities.

"We are all responsible to ensure safety and security in places where we live and work. If we cooperate, these challenges can easily be overcome," he said.

But Mohamed Habib Mnyaa (Mkanyageni-CUF) tasked the deputy minister further through his supplementary question in which he said the force was not responding immediately when notified of crime events.

However, Ambassador Kagasheki refuted the report saying the force was quick to react to tip offs.

He said in situations where the police failed to reach crime areas on time, there were some contributing factors such as lack of cooperation from the community.
