E&D Readership and Development agency, which also operates as Soma, will this week organise a three-day literary festival as part of activities to commemorate its first anniversary, it said yesterday in a statement.
SOMA, which is an autonomous not for profit organization was officially launched in June last with the objective of contributing to the creation of an informed, inspired, learning and empowered society through readership promotion.
Its executive director Demere Kitunga said the celebrations would begin on Friday and each day will have a set of different literary activities for different age groups.
"On Friday, July 10, we will begin with a literary fair which will include open mike poetry recitals, readings, book talk and music.
Saturday will have two main events which will be a fair in the morning and official ceremony in the evening to be accompanied by literary shows and artistic performances.
Sunday will mark the end of the celebrations and the literary festival with youth forums debates, literary shows and a chess game," she noted in the statement.
On SOMA's achievements, Ms Kitunga said that during its one year of operations the agency has managed to achieve many goals towards promotion of a reading culture in the country.
"The aim of SOMA is to enhance a reading culture in Tanzania which doesn't exist.
So through SOMA we try to create various activities which will encourage people of all ages to read for leisure, culture and learning,"explained Ms Kitunga.
