Namibia: Fake Police Officers Look for SPYL Videos

Staff Reporter

7 July 2009

POLICE at Windhoek are investigating a case of two men who apparently passed themselves off as police officers last week.

The men apparently went to the offices of the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation looking for recording footage of a Swapo Party Youth League press conference.

In a statement released on Friday, chief police spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Hofni Hamufungu, said little detail was available regarding the identities of either of the two individuals, or on what specific recording material they were looking for.

He stated that police had "no reason to look for the said footage, and therefore has not sent anyone to look for it at the NBC".

He further stressed that under Namibian law and the 1990 Police Act, it is a crime to impersonate a police officer.

"We therefore appeal to anyone with similar intentions to desist forthwith," he added.
