Southern Africa: Angolan And Namibian Experts Discuss Defence, Security

Luanda — Angolan and Namibian experts Tuesday in Luanda started a ministerial preparatory session to discuss matters concerning defence and security, within the framework of the 16th meeting of the Angola/Namibia Joint Bilateral Commission.

The meeting started with a plenary session, during which the commission's chairman, Angolan deputy Defence minister, Gaspar Santos Rufino, spoke of the need for a deep discussion of the topics on the agenda of the session for due adoption.

In his turn, the commission's co-chairman, the chief of the Namibian Defence Forces, gen. Martin Challi, expressed satisfaction at the success reached by the southern African countries in the political, social and economic domains.

He said the region managed to find solutions to some situations of crisis in various countries of the zone, adding that efforts are in progress to maintain peace and stability.

The session of experts is going on three sub-commissions. They are the defence one, the State and public security and will work within closed doors until Thursday this week.

Friday will set the start of the meeting of the Defence ministers from both countries, to analyse the situation in the domain of defence and security of the respective governments, within the framework of the bilateral commission that gathers once a years.

Among the various matters, the participants are discussing State and public security, substantiated in trans-border crime, with stress to goods trafficking, car and cattle theft.

Documents forgery and matters concerning the movement of people and goods at the common border are also part of the agenda for the meeting.

Angola and Namibia share a land border of 1,376 kilometres.
