Nigeria: FCTA Warns Against Dumping of Construction Waste

Abuja — The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC)through its Department of Development Control, has warned property developers on illegal dumping of construction/ renovation waste.

A statement from the Department said it has decided to employ the "Garbage out, Garbage in" method in which illegal dumped wastes/materials are carried back into the premises of developers.

This approach, according to the statement, has become unavoidable due to the fact that the dumpers have refused all entreaties to confine their construction materials and wastes within their plots as contained in Article 13 of Letter of Conveyance of Building Plan Approval issued for the development or renovation of such properties.

The statement said the council had hitherto resorted to dragging defaulters to the Sanitary Mobile Court in conjunction with the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB). This new development, the Department said, has been introduced in order to further deter developers from contravening the law. Developers are expected to leave the walkways, flower beds, drainages, road corners and streets free of construction wastes and materials.
