Kampala — Arua Hospital staff are likely to lose their transport allowances, the LC5 vice-chairman has said. Kamilo Sabo, who is also the secretary for health, said the funds allocated to the hospital were not sufficient to cover staff transport.
He explained that the hospital had been paying the allowances because most staff reside far away from the hospital. "We have 302 staff members and only 10% of them are accommodated in the hospital. We need sh144m per year to pay the allowances at a bicycle rate," Sabo said.
He explained that the hospital had an annual budget of sh778m, of which 45% (about sh350m) was for procurement of drugs. The balance of sh428m, Sabo added, is used for all other operations.
His remarks come after the staff threatened industrial action over failure to pay their allowances. They argued that other regional hospitals were paying the allowances.
