Uganda: Nakaseke Veterans Given Agricultural Inputs

Frederick Kiwanuka

7 July 2009

Kampala — The Government has given the National Resistance Army (NRA) bush war veterans in Nakaseke district 30 in-calf heifers, 3,000kg of seeds, an artificial insemination centre and two breeding centres for pigs.

Luwero Triangle state minister Nyombi Tembo on Monday said the intervention would help the veterans in Semuto and Kapeeka sub-counties to boost agricultural production.

Kapeeka and Semuto sub-counties have the biggest number of veterans who served in the NRA protracted guerrilla war in the 1980s.

Meeting about 300 veterans and residents from the two sub-counties, Nyombi said the artificial insemination centre would be located in Semuto, while the pig breeding centres would be located both in Semuto and Kapeeka.

He added that the heifers would be delivered in two installments in July and October. Nyombi thanked the residents for their support towards the NRM Government. He assured the veterans that the Government was committed to improving their livelihood.

Nyombi added that the payment of veterans' gratuity packages, which the President launched in Semuto last December, would continue and all the veterans or their families would be covered.

The programme initially covered 1,865 veterans aged between 58 and 100 years. Nyombi urged the residents of Nakaseke to use the Matugga-Semuto road, which is being tarmacked, to transport their produce to Kampala for sale.

He also promised to assist six women groups and six youth groups.
