Kampala — THE murder trial of former Mukono district Police commander (DPC) James Aurien's started yesterday at the High Court in Kampala.

Aurien, 58, who was at the rank of assistant superintendent of Police, was indicted for the murder of his wife, Christine Apolot. The Principal State Attorney, Charles Kaamuli, told the court that the prosecution would produce five witnesses. Prosecution said Aurien shot his wife on April 20, 2008 . He pleaded not guilty.

The first witness, Police constable Allan Alu, told the court that on the fateful night, he found Aurien at Lugazi where he had gone to visit his family. At about midnight, he said, Aurien asked him to go and help lift his wife into a vehicle, saying she had been shot.

Alu said Aurien did not say who had shot his wife, but added that she was disturbing him. He said on reaching Aurien's house, he saw his wife lying in a pool of blood. It is alleged that Aurien shot Apolot in the eye on suspicion that she was having an extra-marital affair.

Aurien is said to have handed in his pistol at the Police station where he worked, saying he had killed his wife, before he disappeared for a week. He turned himself in on April 28. The Police recovered the vehicle in which he is said to have escaped at Bukedea, over 200km from Kampala.

The court adjourned the case until July 23 to enable the prosecution serve its witnesses.
