Ibadan — Chairman of the University of Ibadan Chapter of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Jonathan Olu Omolona, has said the announcement by the Federal Government that it will start the payment of the monetisation arrears to some of its workers from next week Monday is not convincing enough.
He also stated that the announcement will not stop Tuesday's commencement of an indefinite strike by the workers nationwide as the government has never for once exhibited honourable traits.
Omolona disclosed these while announcing the readiness of his union to join the strike already embarked upon by others across the country.
SSANU, which only resumed from its one week warning strike on Monday, according to Omolona, had been given another directive by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union to proceed on another indefinite one as the union's counterparts had done with immediate effect.
When reminded that the Federal Government had given indication that payment of the contentious monetisation would start next Monday, he said his members could not be moved by such declarartion.
He argued that such could only be fanciful if one is dealing with honourable government, adding: "This one, as presently constituted, is not and nobody can rely on them for anything until such is done and physically seen".
Omolona disclosed that the matter could not have dragged to this point if the government had been honourable as far as keeping of promises.
According to him, "it was promised that the money would be paid during the first quarter of this year. When they could not, they said it would be paid during the second quarter and since that time, they had been making weekly promises, so who do we trust? The President that you hardly see of hear from or the minister that usually talk with both sides of the mouth?
"So, when I talk of being honourable, I know what I 'm saying. The strike will continue until the money is paid and we are not even going to rely on mere assurance, but we will go to our banks and confirm that our accounts are credited before the strike will be called off", the SSANU chairman asserted.
