Angola: Besa Sponsors Portuguese Language Course for Refugees

8 July 2009

Luanda — The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) will sponsor Portuguese language courses for the Angolan refugees coming from Congo Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia, with the support of Banco Espírito Santo Angola (BESA).

According to a press note issued by BESA, made available Tuesday to Angop, the programme aims to give the Angolans, who were born and grew up in refugee camps in those countries and currently residing in the provinces of Moxico and Zaire, knowledge of Portuguese, in order to facilitate their economic and social integration in the country.

Many Angolan refugees, adds the source, left the country while children and they returned adults, so courses of Portuguese language are essential for them to continue the process of reintegration in the society.

The Programme for Education of Portuguese Language for refugees includes refugees from some countries of Africa, namely DR Congo, Liberia, Somalia, Sudan, Sierra Leone and others, who live in Angola for some time.
