Sokoto — Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, Prof. Attahiru Jega has stressed the need for alumni associations nationwide to contribute to the development of their various alma maters.

Jega, represented by the Director of the University's Development Office, Alhaji Ahmed Shehu, at a lecture organised by the North-West chapter of the Bayero University Kano Alumni Association, said the institution was seriously involving the association in its development.

He said the institution is working round the clock to demystify the myth that no Nigerian university was currently among the top 200 universities in the world.

A lecturer at the Department of Political Science, Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto, Dr Zaiyanu Umar advocated adequate budgetary allocation for various youth empowerment strategies embarked upon by state governments, saying that a situation where laudable initiatives were denied the necessary finances was capable of limiting the attainment of goals.

Umar said empowerment strategies ought to address all the areas of need, noting that a haphazard approach that touches on only one or few areas may not produce the desired effect.

He said empowerment plans at all levels should be based on solid and quality data that could help in properly articulating the needs of all segments of the population since faulty design and implementation was likely to be the end result of policies not based on quality information.

He urged all the tiers of government in the country to seek and harmonise the existing empowerment strategies.

National President of the Alumni Association, Alhaji Isa Zailani, who was represented by its patron, Professor Abdullahi Zuru promised that members would continue to contribute meaningfully to the general development of the institution.
