Lagos — Chairman of the National Universities Commission (NUC)'s Standing Committee on Private Universities (SCOPU), Prof Jubrila Amin, recently led a team to the proposed Precious Cornerstone University Ibadan, to assess its level of preparedness for take- off.
At the end of the two-day working visit, the team gave a nod of approval to the board of the proposed university, owned by the Sword of the Spirit Ministries, Ibadan.
The team visited the Power Holding Corporation, Water Board, the Local Government secretariat, as well as the proposed permanent site of the university, Amin expressed satisfaction saying, "what we have seen so far is an indication that the promoters are well organised."
The team also met with the planning and implementation committee, board of trustees and consultants and made some suggestions which it said if implemented according to the regulations of the NUC, could see the proposed university receiving its licence in a few months from now.
Prof Amin observed that apart from the compound that was neat and tidy enough for learning, the buildings were also adequate and appropriate, adding that the Health Centre was well cited to cater for the medical needs of the students.
At the palace of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Samuel Odulana Odugade 1, the Olubadan implored the team to accelerate the process for a quick take-off .
Briefing the pres after the three-day visit, Bishop Wale oke expressed satisfaction with the assessment saying, the university would take off next year, once the licence was issued.
He explained that with the facilities on ground, the university could smoothly take off with seven departments, 19 programmes and about 450 students. He assured the visitors that the university would be strike-free and bereft of any form of cult activities, adding that the aim of the university was to produce job creators and not job seekers.
This, he said would be achieved through its research driven programmes, the dearth of which, he said, was responsible for the present state of university education in the country. He said efforts would be made by the board of the proposed university to design programmes where creative ideas would be imparted, with the aim of bringing back the lost standard in the university system.
He also disclosed that a programme would be put in place to facilitate easy enrolment for the youth in the rural areas that are brilliant but financially handicapped. The scholarship scheme would be designed to help finance their total and not just a segment of their education while at the university.
