Harare — Zimbabwe will on Thursday open an international investors conference where 100 world renowned international financiers have been invited by the inclusive government as it steps up efforts to revive the country's comatose economy.
The coalition formed by President Robert Mugabe and his former arch rival and now Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai is seeking US$8 billion over the next three years to breathe life into an economy battered by almost a decade of political infighting.
According to the Ministry of Economic Planning and Investment Promotion, the conference that would be used to showcase the country's investment opportunities has attracted 700 delegates from all over the world.
Mr Mugabe, Mr Tsvangirai and Deputy Prime Minister Professor Arthur Mutambara would address the conference on the formation of the inclusive government, the implementation of the September 15 power sharing agreement and also explain their working relationship.
The three leaders would also speak on cabinet policy formulation, perception issues and the rule of law and property rights.
Political bickering and poor economic policies blamed on Mr Mugabe's previous administration drove Zimbabwe to world record hyper inflation levels and a devastating humanitarian crisis.
But since the formation of the unity government last February between Mr Mugabe's Zanu PF and the two Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) led by Mr Tsvangirai and Prof Mutambara, Zimbabwe has created a platform from which the crippled economy can be revived.
African institutions and neighbouring countries have promised the fledgling coalition close to US$1 billion in lines of credit so far and there are reports that China is ready to provide US$950 million in soft loans.
Economic Planning and Investment Promotion Minister, Mr Elton Mangoma says the conference comes at a time when there were signs of an economic revival.
When we came into office In February, we had employment of six per cent and capacity utilisation of less than 10 percent, Mr Mangoma told a recent mining conference.
Our production has now gone up to between 20 and 30 per cent and employment is now about 15 percent.
And those who are employed are a lot more secure because they can see that the companies are a lot more steady.Meanwhile, the coalition is divided over the fate of the Zimbabwean dollar that was scrapped early this year after hyperinflation rendered it worthless.
Mr Mugabe says he wants the dollar to return because dollarisation has worsened the plight of ordinary people while MDC officials including Mr Tsangirai and Finance Minister Mr Tendai Biti argue the country must first resuscitate its industries.
Industry Minister, Professor Welshman Ncube of the Prof Mutambara led MDC on Tuesday told an African forum in London that Zimbabwe would consider adopting the South African rand as its anchor currency.
We cannot re-enter the Zimbabwe dollar without the economy to support that, we need another solution, he said.We cannot forever continue with multiple currencies.
If we cant at least join the rand monetary union, we will have money allocated to Zimbabwe through that system.
No decision has been made, we will debate it and see what the best alternative is.
A number of the southern African countries including Namibia, Swaziland and Lesotho use the South African rand alongside their currencies.

I cannot understand why the SOUTH African Rand was not used instead of the USD from the word go -it must be causing confusion- i have heard from friends that some big companies are taking their time converting to the USD - from the zim currency
The Minister of Swiss Bank Accounts and Alternative Money has decried the insistence of investors and bank depositors that their money be returned to them. He stated that if everyone wanted their dollars, euros and rands back that they would have to report to their local police station, after dark, and fill out the required forms and, he warned, bring an overnight bag as it would most likely be a 2 to 4 week process. The alternative would be to accept whatever alternative form of funds were available, kwatchas being the most one should hope for.
