Somalia: Explosion Kills Children in Kismayu Town

8 July 2009

Kismayu — At least two children have been killed near Kismayu town 500 kilometers south of the Somali capital Mogadishu after a landmine exploded around where they were playing, witnesses told Shabelle radio on Wednesday.

One of the parents of the children told Shabelle radio that the explosion occurred in Ganjaron village about 70 west of Kismayu town in Lower Jubba region as they were plying on it near where the mine was buried, killing two of the children there.

Residents and the parents of the children expressed concern about the death of the kids saying that it seemed an explosive thing which buried there in the era that the civil war continued in the country.

It is not the first time that explosion causes casualties of deaths and injures in Somalia due to 19 years of fighting.
