TWENTY-THREE teachers on the Copperbelt have been suspended from various unions for allegedly inciting their colleagues to turn against their leaders.
Basic Teachers Union of Zambia (BETUZ) Copperbelt provincial chairperson Rasford Kunda said in an interview in Kitwe yesterday that some of the affected were senior union officials.
Mr Kunda said the 23 teachers had been suspended from their unions for allegedly inciting teachers to turn against their leaders after the latter signed the 15 per cent salary increment agreement with the Government.
He said the teachers would remain suspended until they apologised to the unions.
Mr Kunda said it was sad that some teachers in the province were agitating for the formation of another union when there had been calls for all teachers' unions in the country to merge.
"We have suspended 23 teachers who have been inciting their colleagues to turn against the union. These teachers will remain suspended until they exculpate themselves and apologise to the unions," Mr Kunda said.
He said it was unfortunate that some teachers in the province were allegedly causing confusion in the unions.
"I am disappointed that some of our members could be calling for the formation of another union when teachers in the country are working towards coming together to form one union that will represent them," he said.
Mr Kunda said the union would not allow indiscipline in the unions and would deal with those who had been suspended.
