Katsina — Katsina State Commi-ssioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Sani Makana, yesterday said over N6.3 billion have been spent within two years, for development of the agricultural sector and its sub sectors.
From the amount, Makana said N5.5 billion was spent to purchase fertiliser products for dry and rainy season farming, buffer stock programme and rehabilitation of a grain silo, to ensure constant availability of grains.
The commissioner, who was represented by the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Maikaita Ango, said irrigation sub sector gulped over N160 million for promotion of dry season farming and expanding of selected irrigation project sites across the state.
Makana said forestry and veterinary sub sectors had N58.5 million and N55.5 million respectively allocated to them, while the rest was expended on shelterbelts and woodlot development, the development of tree nursery and seedling production, roadside planting, with control of animal disease and vaccination, and purchase of drugs for the drug revolving fund.
He said the livestock sub sector gulped over N61 million for improvement of cattle breeding ranches, goats breed improvement and development of community pasture, to check recurring problem of farmer and pastoral clashes in several parts of the state. Makana said N424 million was spent by the state's agriculture and rural development agency to execute various projects, including procurement of agrochemicals and equipment, orchard development, resuscitation of extension services, packaging of assorted seeds and loan disbursement to rural enterprises with agricultural base.
