Nigeria: 'Kafin-Zaki Dam Contract Not Awarded'

Abdul-Rahman Abubakar

8 July 2009

Contrary to recent media reports, the Federal Government is yet to approve the construction of the disputed Kafin-Zaki Dam in Bauchi State let alone awarding the contract, Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, representing Yobe North, said on Monday.

Reacting to reports on the award of the contract in a statement, Senator Lawan said so far government has approved that an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) be conducted in the affected area and the report is yet to be ready to guide government on the final position of the dam construction.

He described publications that the contract has been awarded as misleading saying such people "Have found it convenient to mislead the public and consequently cause disquiet and breach of peace among the downstream communities."

Senator Lawan insists that construction of the dam will put downstream communities of Hadejia-Jama'are rivers in a precarious situation
