Botswana: Woman Charged in Boyfriend's Death

A 28-year-old woman has been remanded in custody in connection with a murder at Gaborone West Phase One on Sunday.

Matshidiso Ntwaagae, a waitress at O'Hagans Pub, Game City a was arraigned at the Broadhurst Magistrate Court on yesterday morning to answer charges related to the death of Pule Letota. Ntwaagae and the deceased were lovers. On the fateful day, it alleged they had misunderstandings after which she hacked Letota to death with an axe.

The prosecutor, Sub-Inspector Chinga Pateletso made an application that the plea be reserved. Pateletso told the court that the police investigations were on going hence the accused should be remanded in custody.

Ntwaagae told the court that she is still to meet with her parents and discuss legal representation.

When asked whether he had anything to say, she told the court that she just wanted to go home..

However, Magistrate Nokothula Moyo advised her that if she wants bail, she had to apply to the High Court. Moyo set another mention date for July 16.

Ntwaagae's family and friends arrived at the court after the session had begun. When she saw them, she broke down and sobbed in the courtroom. Some of the relatives and friends consoled her, but they too broke down and wept when Ntwaagae was called to the dock.

At the close of the court session, the drama continued outside as family and friends formed a barricade around her to block photojournalists.

Ntwaagae found refugee in the police van that whisked her away to the cells.
