Botswana: Shell Botswana Launches Efficient Diesel

8 July 2009

The New Shell Diesel Extra with fuel economy formula has been introduced to the Botswana market as the promoters move to double productivity through delivering environmentally-friendly and better fuels around the globe.

The new fuel sold through Shell Botswana contains a unique formulation designed to give motorists extra kilometres at no extra cost. It has been specifically developed for all diesel vehicles.

Speaking last week in Gaborone, Shell Botswana country chairman, Boitumelo Sekwababe said that they are dedicated to delivering better fuels around the world. He said they have been working to develop products to address motorists' needs for improved fuel economy.

"Wide-ranging research has shown that many of our diesel customers want a fuel that is going to take them further without having to pay more. Diesel is recognised for fuel efficiency and we have built on that benefit by developing our new fuel economy formula, which if used in combination with our Shell Fuel Save tips, can help reduce our customers' trips to the pump."

New Shell Diesel Extra with fuel economy formula is designed to protect the engine against mileage-robbing deposits than regular diesel. It helps to produce a more effective combustion in the engine. This improves the engine's efficiency.

The fuel economy benefits of New Shell Diesel Extra have been demonstrated in tests conducted with a number of popular diesel cars by MIRA, independent vehicle testing specialists.

Tests conducted by Shell have also shown the fuel's ability to improve fuel economy in heavy-duty engines by protecting against the build up of deposits on injectors. Shell has created New Shell Diesel Extra with fuel economy formula to respond to customers' needs and to keep ahead of industry trends.

New Shell Diesel Extra with fuel economy formula is available at all Shell Service Stations across Botswana beginning this month.

"New Shell Diesel Extra with fuel economy formula is the next phase in our mission to help motorists improve their fuel efficiency. In 2005, we introduced Shell Diesel Extra with extra engine protection at no extra cost.

"Now, we bring you the New Shell Diesel Extra, the product that will give you extra kilometres at no extra cost compared to standard diesel. The heavy-duty engines stand to benefit tremendously as the new formulation is designed for engine efficiency," said Sekwababe.

He pointed out that in addition to providing high quality fuels, Shell is aware that it is equally important that there are improvements on the way the scarce energy resources are used.

Combining the fuel saving qualities of New Shell Diesel Extra and the fuel saving tips, Shell has demonstrated it's commitment to conserve the environment and contribute to sustainable development.

In addition to developing New Shell Diesel Extra with fuel economy formula, Shell has created Shell Fuel Save tips to help motorists get extra kilometres out of Shell fuel. Using the tips and taking advantage of Shell's fuel economy formula, drivers can aim to save 10 percent or more fuel while driving.

John and Helen Taylor, holders of the Guinness World record for the lowest fuel consumption and holders of many other national and international records on fuel economy, presented their skills in a number of fuel saving engagements last week, thanks to Shell Botswana.

The Taylors, who achieved their records using Shell fuel, graced the launch and participated in the test-drive for the New Shell Diesel Extra from Gaborone to Mahalapye.

During the test-drive, the Taylors explored several Shell's top ten fuel-saving tips. They said that fuel economy is maximised in the engine through a combination of good driving habits and using the right fuel.

Shell fuel economy formula is designed to help reduce friction and improve cleanliness in the engine, thereby improving fuel efficiency and aggressive driving can use as much as a third more fuel than safe driving. Drivers are advised to avoid accelerating or braking too hard and keep their steering as smooth as possible.

The Taylors said that changing gears carefully improves fuel consumption and that drivers should never 'red line' the rev counter as this is unnecessary waste of fuel. They added that a well-tuned engine improved fuel economy.

Typically, diesel vehicles are 20-30% more fuel-efficient than their gasoline counterparts.

Last year, it was estimated that more than half of the new cars purchased in Europe used diesel. A recent survey by J.D. Power and Associates says that sales of diesel cars are likely to double in Central and Eastern Europe, triple in Latin America and Asia and quadruple in the US by 2015.
