Lagos — Management of a foremost medical institution, Reddington Hospital , yesterday explained how the medical outfit was able to achieve a feat in medical history as it performed the first Coronary Angioplasty and Stenting procedure in Nigeria.
The hospital had earlier reported that one of its medical practitioners, Dr. Adeyemi Johnson, a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, leading a team of physicians, nurses and technicians was able to perform the first coronary Angioplasty and stenting procedure Monday at its facility in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital , Dr. Yemi Onabowale, at a press briefing , Wednesday, said, first and foremost, the hospital was able to record the feat due to the fact that it possesses the where-with-all in terms of medical infrastructure such as latest medical technologies to carry out the procedure and also has the only cardiologist trained in that area of medical specialisation.
Onabowale said though the procedure is a common practice in other parts of the world particularly in the industrial countries, it was the first of its kind in Nigeria and Reddington the only hospital that has the medical equipment to carry out the method.
According to him, the common practice in such a situation was to seduce the patient and open him/her up while the operation lasts, but in this case, the procedure was carried out in the presence of the patients.
Johnson who led the team of the medical personnel to carry out the treatment said, a tube was passed into the region of the heart of the patient to locate the point of problem and another instrument passed through the pipe to evacuate the clotted blood blocking the free flow of the blood to the heart leading to heart attack.
The two patients on whom the operation was performed and now recuperating at the hospital spoke to pressmen on their experiences. First to speak was a medical doctor, Dr. Deji Morenikeji, who claimed he has been suffering from chest pain since March this year and was already planning to go abroad for treatment knowing that death was imminent.
According to him, while still contemplating on going abroad, he was receiving treatment in the country until he had a heart attack and was rushed to Reddingtion hospital.Luckily he claimed that the hospital possessed equipment to revive him, stressing that he was satisfied with the treatment administered on him , expressing confidence that he was physically all right and ready to be discharged anytime from now.
The other patient, 54-year-old Mrs. Cynthia Onwurah, a teacher, claimed to have been experiencing serious pain in the chest in the past two years and was planning to go either to London or Indian when he came across Dr. Adeyemi Johnson who has been managing the condition for her, with the promise that the plan was in the pipe line by Reddingtion hospital to acquire equipment for the treatment of the condition.
She claimed that, when the hospital got the equipment, Johnson immediately alerted her husband, claiming that they should come for the treatment without delay, which they did on Monday 6th July, 2009, and now turned out to be a huge success.Onabowale advised that any body from the age of 40 years should make sure that once in a year, a medical test is carried out to ensure that there is no medical complication that can lead to a heart attack.
