Bauchi — Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Education, Honourable Faruq Lawan, has appealed to National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), to suspend its planned nationwide demonstration.
NANS had commenced a nationwide demonstration in support of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on strike to press home its demands for improved welfare and other issues.
Lawan, who made the appeal in an interview in Bauchi, said the demonstration was likely to mar government's efforts at resolving the problem, pointing out that nothing should be done to negatively impact on the present state of our educational system in the country.
He said government had already scheduled a stakeholders meeting for tomorrow, to clear the pending issue with ASUU and appealed to NANS to exercise patience and wait for the outcome of that meeting.
Lawan said government was concerned about effects of the strike on the quality and stability in the nation's education system, saying development of the sector is the responsibility of all and sundry.

Sometimes you would be tempted to conclude that the authoritative representation of Nigerian student that gives birth to the paper tiger NANS be revoked. Afterall NANS was formed to ensure the good welfarism and due representation of largest integra part of the nigerian youth; the Nigerian students. The question in my mind and the minds of others is why should NANS keep quite and calm in the face of the seemingly unending ASUU industrial strike action? May be NANS is waiting till the federal government settles and honours her agreement with the Union at her own convenient time. ...But as far as i am concern the association should be courageous enough to declare mass student unrest to speed up the negotiation, because a second wasted can never be regained.
