Uganda:Police End Moroto Strike

Kampala — A joint force of the UPDF and the Police on Monday quelled a strike by Senior Four students of Kangole Girls' Secondary School in Moroto district.

The students were reportedly protesting a decision by the teachers not to allow boys from Kaabong Secondary School to spend a night at Kangole.

The headmistress, Sr. Jane Frances Nabulya, said the students hatched the plan to strike on Saturday after the school administration sent away boys from Kaabong who had been invited for a scouts' party.

However, the students said they rioted because the school gave them bad food. Wild Kangole students, armed with stones and sticks, torched one of the grass-thatched cottages that was being used as a reading room.

The students also threatened to burn the fence and the library, but were intercepted by the Police and army officers. About 10 students sustained injuries in the stampede. Nabulya said the school would not close, adding that they would search for trouble-makers and discipline them.

The district Police commander, Tom Ebong, said the Police would camp at the school until the situation goes back to normal.
