Uganda: Parents Told to Provide for Their Kids

Kampala — Parents have been warned to stop blaming the Government for the poor school performance of their children. The education minister, Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire, said parents were neglecting their responsibilities.

"I can get a call from a parent asking me when the new term begins. This shows that the parent did not even look at the child's end-of-term report," the minister said.

She said some parents do not monitor their children's class progress or provide school necessities. Bitamazire was on Sunday speaking at the celebrations to mark the 10th anniversary of Bukandula College School in Gomba county, Mpigi district.

"Do not expect me to come to your homes and wake up the children to go to school. Give them pencils and books," she said. Gomba county MP Rosemary Muyinda said the education system was improving and commended the proprietors of private schools.

She said if parents played their role in educating the children, it would ease the work of the teachers and lead to better performance.
