Kampala — BUSOGA and Kumi universities in eastern Uganda will this year get sh1b each from the Government for construction work. The deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, said science laboratories will be part of the structures to be built.

Kadaga said the money was part of the Government's support to private universities to enable them offer quality services. She said Kabale university was the beneficiary last year, adding that the trend would continue to cover other private universities.

Kadaga also disclosed that the Government had set aside sh600m to assist graduates who want to further their studies, but have no money.

The deputy Speaker, who is the chairperson of the Busoga University Council, made the remarks at the university's eighth graduation ceremony recently.

A total of 500 students were passed out at the 10- year-old university in Iganga. The function was presided over by the chancellor, Justice Anna Magezi.

The vice-chancellor, Prof. Christopher Bakwesegha, said the university had set up a quality assurance directorate, which is responsible for quality issues in all university operations, especially those relating to academics.
