Minna — The Commander of the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), Nigerian Army Minna, Major General Augustine Ogunedo has called on Nigerians to explore the option of dialogue towards addressing grievances instead of taking up arms to avoid a repeat of the 1967 Nigerian civil war.
Maj. Gen Ogunedo made the call yesterday at a ceremony to mark the 2009 Nigerian Army Day. He maintained that Nigerians ought to have learnt from the Nigerian civil war, adding that using arms to settle differences would only leave Nigeria in total anarchy.
"No matter the problem or challenge confronting us, either as individuals, organizations or group, we must never resorts to arms to settle our differences", he said.
The Commander while thanking some of the Niger Delta militants for accepting the amnesty granted them by President Yar'adua, urged others who are yet to accept the offer to give peace a chance by laying down their arms.
"We must dialogue until we find an amicable solution to our differences. We must embrace other means of conflict resolutions", he said. Ogunedo urged members of the Armed Forces who were agitating for salary increase to remain committed to their duties, saying government would look into their demands. Ogunedo also tasked the Nigerian Army to be responsive to civil authorities.
