Nigeria: Minister Moves to Avert Strike By PHCN Workers

Abuja — MINISTER of Labour and Productivity, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode has scheduled a meeting for today with stakeholders in the power sector, having confirmed report of a looming industrial action planned by staff of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) over issues of welfare.

A press statement signed by the Assistant Director of Press in the ministry, Samuel Olowookere, reads, "In order to achieve a peaceful resolution of all the issues at stake the minister has invited representatives of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), National Security Adviser (NSA) and Office of Head of the Civil Service of the Federation for the meeting."

Others invited for the meeting, according to the statement, include representatives of federal ministries of Power and Finance, representatives of the Budget Office of the Federation, management of PHCN and the Secretary, National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission.

Representatives of workers' unions invited include the leadership of the National Union of Electricity Employees and the leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Electricity and Allied Companies.

The minister expressed preference for use of dialogue to resolve industrial dispute, reaffirming 'government's determination' to improve power generation and distribution in the country.
