Kampala — The Kampala High Court yesterday gave bail to embattled Jinja Mayor Mohammed Baswari Kezaala. Judge Paul Mugamba granted the mayor bail of Shs20m not cash and his three sureties were bonded Shs10m each.
Mr Kezaala, who was committed to Anti-Corruption Court for trial, is facing charges of abuse of office and causing financial loss of over Shs16 million to Jinja Municipality between July 2006 and April 2008.
It is alleged he got the money from the Mayor's Charity Fund and passed it to Green Summer Enterprises for the purchase of iron sheets and cement fraudulently.
In his ruling, the judge ordered Mr Kezaala to deposit his passport in court and to report to the registrar Anti-Corruption Court every second Wednesday of the month. This is the second time the mayor is being released on bail. Court heard that Mr Kezaala was first released on bail on January 23 by the High Court.
However, on June 25, Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Vincent Mugabo cancelled the mayor's bail after prosecutors from the IGG's office informed him that they were ready with all the evidence for the trial.
