Uganda: 15,000 Have No Food in Kayunga

Charles Jjuuko

8 July 2009

Kampala — AT least 15,000 residents in Kayunga district face starvation following a prolonged drought in the area.

The most affected areas are Galiraya and Bbaale sub-counties, where crops have dried up. Galiraya sub-county agricultural officer, George Kirya, said most families hardly have a meal in a day, while others starve because they cannot afford to buy maize flour.

"People planted crops very late because of delayed rain. By the time they planted, the rainy season was almost over," Kiirya explained.

The community development officer, Collins Kafeero, noted that some residents were fleeing to the neighbouring districts of Nakasongola and Luwero.
