45 of them trained in the Microsoft certified engineer program, and 35 followed the Microsoft digital literacy curriculum.

Speaking at the closing of the training, the RDB deputy CEO charged with IT, Nkubito Bakuramutsa, pointed out that human capacity development will significantly promote and encourage deployment and utilization of ICT in the economy as well as the society.

He pointed out that the government has identified human resource development as one of the critical means to meet the changing demands of the economy. "It is in this context that we strongly embrace training partnerships with credible IT stakeholders such as Microsoft to ensure that Rwanda benefits from advances and opportunities of the emerging information age," Nkubito said.

About 300 government employees will undergo comprehensive Microsoft training on computer applications especially in Microsoft Office 2007 Suite products which include Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access. They will also benefit through trainings regarding digital audio, video, photography and digital technology before the end of the year.

According to Microsoft representative Chris Mukua, both government and Microsoft are contemplating other areas of collaboration to increase human capacity and infrastructure development.

"The world continues to focus on the power of technology to change lives and transform business practices, so it has become increasingly important for workers to be proficient in the use of leading technology products on the market," Mukua observed.

Innocent Ruzindana, one of the trainees of Microsoft, pointed out that the training will help employees improve their work through increased output. "Such trainings are important not only for the work we do but also to improve our capacities on a personal level," Ruzindana said.

He urged the government through RDB/IT to offer other training opportunities in technology-related courses so that they can be more efficient in their undertakings.

The just concluded training is the second of the kind that Microsoft has conducted in collaboration with the government; during the first one two months ago employees of Electrogaz were trained.
