President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf on July 9 received the deed for 68.52 acres of land from the citizens of Sarkpawein Town, Mambah Kaba District, Lower Margibi County, for the construction of housing units.
Receiving the deed on Thursday in Sarkpawein, the President thanked the residents for the initiative and assured them that the land will be used for the construction of a low-cost housing estate for the Liberian people. She said the initiative will help efforts in promoting the Poverty Reduction Strategy, otherwise known as "Lift Liberia;" provide job opportunities for community residents as well as the construction of schools and clinics.
According to an Executive Mansion release, the Liberian leader also assured the people of Sarkpawein that she will not be deterred in carrying out the mandate given to her by the Liberian people. Her statement was in response to a petition by the citizens of Margibi County calling on her to contest the 2011 national elections.
Earlier the citizens of the district warmly welcomed the President and appealed to her to recondition the roads in the area.
Present at the program were Lands, Mines and Energy Minister Dr. Eugene Shannon, Margibi County Superintendent Levi Piah, Margibi County District #4 Representative Ballah Zayzay, local chiefs and traditional leaders.
