Nairobi — He was known as a genius, a mastermind and, yes, a man with results. Shockingly though, Kenya's Gideon Ochieng', Gor Mahia's stand-in-coach, has a new title: unemployed coach.
Ochieng', who has since been replaced by James Siang'a in total contravention of the Kenyan Premier League policy on coaches, became the latest and most stunning victim of the KPL coaches purge.
In its fifth policy, KPL stipulates among other points that "...the minimum written notice for termination of the contract by either party shall be thirty (30) days or payment by the club to the coach of the salary specified in the most recently signed contract for thirty (30) days in lieu of such notice...."
Move was unfairHis sin? He has been accused of taking sides with the fans, who have been against Siang'a.
Ochieng' becomes the second coach to "leave" the thankless job this week, joining AFC Leopards' Edward Manoah.
"It took me by surprise, to be told that I have been thrown out of the technical bench of the club. It was quite unfair to me, owing to the fact that I have guided the club to its current seventh position from 15th," said Ochieng', who was noticeably annoyed.
After only three months in charge at Gor, Ochieng's services were no longer needed. What is baffling though, is the fact that he managed to guide Gor to bag 21 of their 22 points in the standings.
Ochieng' took over from Siang'a in April and, while he did do well for the club in the three months - seven wins and one loss - the results were simply not good enough when you're managing a big club like Gor.
