Kenya: Surprises At Nanyuki Rally

Nation Correspondent

9 July 2009

Nairobi — The fifth round of the KCB Kenya National Rally Championship will this year introduce three new and more challenging stages.

At the first special section of the two-day KCB Nanyuki Rally on July 17 within the ASK showground in Meru, drivers will entertain the crowds around the smooth and twisty two-kilometre track.

An overnight Parc Ferme at the Meru Municipal Council yard in Meru town will provide drivers with a cold night and rejuvenation for the 7am start on Saturday.

The cars will then go from 5,200 feet above sea level to over 9,000 feet and what is a picture perfect - albeit bitingly cold - location for the next two stages over the grain fields of the Kisima Farm ahead of the finish in Nanyuki.

The two stages have never been rallied and the only familiarity drivers may discern will be the threateningly close passes through gates, fences and field line racing akin to last year's stages.

The altitude, quickly varying terrain and the all-out demanding nature of both stages will no doubt test man and machine in quick succession.

By 8.30am the first car should arrive at the Lolomarik Service Park (3 km north of Timau Town off the main highway) and prepare for what may be familiar roads on the Lolomarik Stage.

A shorter version of the stage will be used this year (21 km).
