Kampala — NATIONAL motorsport governing body, FMU has appealed to competitors to exhibit high standards and wear fire-proof clothing in next weekend's UMOSPOC Challenge rally in Mukono.
FMU vice president (technical) Kisitu Mayanja observed that the majority of drivers and navigators own fire-proof clothing but are reluctant to wear them in National Rally Championship events.
"In the Pearl of Africa Uganda rally they normally wear fire-proof underwear because FIA regulations require them to do so but when it comes to local events they don't put them on," Kisitu said.
"I would advise them to put them on in the UMOSPOC rally because it's a safety measure even if we haven't yet enforced the law in local events." A piece of fire-proof underwear costs about $200 (sh0.4m).
Kisitu reminded competitors that they must also wear fire-proof overalls in all other domestic events as a safety measure.
Kisitu argued that if competitors measure up to international standards in local events, it would be easy for the federation to handle safety in the future Pearl of Africa Uganda rally editions.
The majority of competitors will go route reccing in Mukono for the UMOSPOC event that will start with a super special stage at Festino Cite double track circuit on July 18 before the second leg the following day.
