Kampala — THE Police in western Uganda are hunting for eight suspects who escaped from Kamwenge Police station on Sunday night.
Western regional Police spokesperson Elly Matte said the suspects broke the bolt of the dilapidated uniport in which they were detained and took off. Matte said four of the suspects were held over defilement, two over theft, one over arson and the other on robbery charges.
He identified the suspects as Vencesia Arinitwe, Innocent Mubangizi, Amos Bwigara and David Livingstone Nakunda. Others were Ivan Nuwamanya, Kenneth Kamugisa, Alex Arinaitwe and another one only identified as Abaho. Matte added that the Police arrested constable John Byamungu over negligence.
"By the time the suspects escaped, Byamungu was not at his station yet he was the officer on duty. We shall charge him with neglecting his work," he disclosed. Matte added that the number of suspects who escape from the Police had increased because of lack of proper detention rooms.
In June, nine suspects escaped from Kyenjojo Police Station.
He appealed to the Government to construct structures for the Police, especially in the new districts.
