Africa: Somali MP Calls for AU Protection, Lauds Uganda

Kampala — A SOMALI MP has asked the African Union (AU) to intervene in the ongoing war in Somalia and protect legislators.

The MP for South-West Somalia, Mohammed Abdallah Saredo, said MPs had become a target for the militia group, Al-Shabaab. She said the group that is fighting to overthrow Sheikh Sharif Ahamed is opposed to the transitional federal government and law and order.

Saredo, who is also a Pan African MP, commended Uganda and Burundi for providing peacekeepers. She, however, said more support from the AU was needed to boost the peace mission. Uganda and Burundi have over 4,000 troops deployed in Somalia.

In an interview with The New Vision, Seredo, who has been in Uganda for a month, said she recently received information that her home was attacked and property worth $3,000 (about sh6m) looted.

She said three days before her home was looted, her neighbour and fellow MP, Shaebelle Mohammed Hussein Abdul, was killed by the militia.

Asked whether she was not afraid to return to her country, Seredo said: "As an MP, I am going back to serve my people."
