Kampala — OVER 1,000 primary school pupils in Gulu municipality have been sent home due to lack of pit latrines.
Layibi Primary School was closed on Friday when the municipal inspector, Helen Nyeko, visited the school. It has 1,024 pupils. The head teacher, Okello Albino, said the existing pit latrines were cracked and could easily fall in. He added that they were built in 2004 and had filled up.
Okillo said parents did not want to contribute towards the rehabilitation of the school. He said since the beginning of the year, only sh80,000 had been collected.
The Parent and Teacher's Association chairperson, Lucy Nyeko, expressed doubt that the parents would contribute money to construct new pit latrines before the end of the term.
