Kampala — THE Government has started upgrading Arua airfield into an international airport by constructing a new passenger terminal.
The Civil Aviation Authority's (CAA) managing director, Wenceslaus Rama Makuza, said the terminal designed to accommodate 200 passengers was the first among other developments earmarked for the aerodrome.
"We hope to have the building ready in eight months, after which we shall go into the second phase of widening and tarmacking the runway," Makuza said during the ground-breaking ceremony recently.
He said the runway would be widened from 1.8km to 2.5km long and 30m to 45m wide to support heavy jets of up to the 737 series. Makuza said the Government had designated the airfield for international flights.
He asked the local leaders to lobby for more land to facilitate the expansion programme.
Transport state minister Simon Ejua said the airport would spur economic development due to its strategic location as a business hub for Southern Sudan and north-eastern DR Congo.
