Abuja — An Abuja Magistrate court Wednesday ordered the remand in prison of a 25-year-old commercial driver, pending the approval of his bail application.
The driver, Sahid Yusuf of Mpape Village, Abuja, was arraigned for reckless driving that allegedly caused the death of a 17-year-old Ghanaian, Kingsford Kpodo on June 27, 2009.
Prosecutor Ahmed Mohammed stated in court that the accused carelessly drove a Toyota Hiace commercial bus with registration number XB 483 FFA from Mpape, heading towards Bannex junction.
"On reaching near Nicon junction, the accused drove the bus without due care and attention, in a manner so dangerous with no regard to other road users," the prosecutor added.
He disclosed further that the accused made a U-turn on the express way without observing an incoming vehicle behind him and that in the process; he obstructed another commercial bus with registration number XB 192 WSN driven by one Okanlawon Jimoh.
"As a result of his action, he caused the death of one of his passengers, a Ghanaian, by name Kingsford Kpodo and drove without a license, thereby contravening Section 27 Cap 458 of the Federal Law of Nigeria, Sections 29 and 7(1) of the Road Traffic Act as well as Section 34 Sub (C) of Road Traffic Act," the prosecutor stated.
When the charges were read to the accused person, he pleaded not guilty and requested for bail, which the prosecutor did not oppose. After the denial, the Prosecutor Mohammed requested for a hearing date to enable the police prepare their witnesses for the case.
Chief Magistrate Binta Mohammed ordered that the accused person be remanded in prison custody till next week when the hearing on the case will commence.
She also informed him to file a proper written application for his bail before it can be considered.
